Malachi 4:1-6 & Luke 3:1-20
John the Baptist is important to the coming of Jesus. He clears the way for Jesus. John the Baptist attacks systems of injustice that make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. He says “You viper, you snake!” to those who are unjust and seek more power and wealth while pushing the lowly even lowlier. Jesus in turn says that there is no one greater than John, but then he turns everything on its head and says the least of those in God’s Kingdom is greater than John. This is grace, God’s grace.
