Lectionary Passages: 2 Peter 1:16-21 & Matthew 17:1-9
We are often shaped and molded by suffering, struggles and darkness in our lives. We come to know God as the dark clouds consume us. We experience the mystery of God when things are not clear. It is often in our darkest times that God’s light reveals itself to us still leaving us bewildered by the mystery of the divine.
During the transfiguration in which in a bright cloud, the mystery of Jesus was experienced by his 3 disciples, and the deity of Jesus shone forth in a blinding light; the disciples were terrified and left speechless. They cannot understand with their minds what has happened. Even as Jesus is revealed to them during the transfiguration, they are still confused. To experience the mystery of the divine does not gives us all the answers, but it provides us with what our souls need.
